Inside Look: “Hop Time” in Yorktown

Just in time for the Holidays, we’ve found the perfect place to get gifts for the beer-lovers AND the aspiring chefs in the family! ‘Hop Time’ is conveniently located in the Village Square shopping center in Yorktown. They offer 30 (rotating) craft beers, 2-3 ciders and some awesome options for growlers and growler cases. The store also has an incredible selection of 100% virgin and extra virgin oils and vinegars with no artificial flavors – all naturally infused.

Owner Derek Ryan has many years of culinary experience and wanted to go out on his own and start something different. With several years of operating The Festhaus at Busch Gardens, he’s quite familiar with both craft beer and the flavoring of fine food.

As you enter the store, the left side is lined with 25-30 containers of gourmet oils and vinegars including tasting stations to ‘try before you buy’. So far, the most popular vinegars have been dark chocolate balsamic (good on fruit or topping for desserts) and honey ginger. The top-selling oils have been garlic and habanero. Towards the back of the store, you’ll find the growler-filling station with 30 options of craft beer and on the other side, a massive display of growler options.

‘Hop Time’ most definitely has one of the largest selection of growlers we’ve seen. They offer anything from a 4-pack of 16oz growlers to 32oz or 64oz. You can also bring your own to fill if you prefer. Not only do they carry insulated growler cases, but also offer a stainless steel 64oz ‘man can’. With all of these great options in one store, Ryan decided to start selling gift baskets for the Holidays. Beginning around Thanksgiving, Hop Time will offer a selection of baskets with different items that will be sure to make gift-giving much easier this Christmas!

After speaking with owner, Derek Ryan, it’s clear he has a true appreciation for the business. He also makes sure to keep at least 30% of the beer options local. We were very happy to see the newest release from Tradition Brewing Company, Alt Bier, as well as a Porter from Oozlefinch on tap. For the guests who love cider, options include Bold Rock Hard Cider, Potters Oak Barrel Cider, and of course the Pumpkin Cider for Fall. During the month of October, which is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, they are featuring Larry’s Pink Lemonade.

Hours of operation are daily 10am-9pm, with the exception of closing at 8pm on Mondays and 6pm on Sundays. Stop by, try the amazing flavors of oils and vinegars, and don’t forget to fill your growlers!
