Hampton Summer Guide: Part 2 | “Ft. Monroe”

Fort Monroe is filled with history and tons of things to explore there this summer. A museum surrounded by a moat, beach club, and craft brewery are a few things that make Fort Monroe a must-do. Round up your friends and family to spend a sunny day at the Fort.

The Casemate Museum

The Casemate Museum at Fort Monroe not only offers an incredibly cool tour inside but also fun events including Ranger Programs for kids. If you haven’t been to Fort Monroe, this is definitely a must-visit attraction. A Casemate by definition is a fortified gun emplacement or armored structure from which guns are fired. That alone should catch your attention!

Approaching the museum, you will encounter massive historic walls all around you. Somewhat creepy all brick tunnels with no end, and of course, the enchanting moat. It really is like a scene taken from an old movie set back in the 1800’s.

The museum features several rooms filled with anything from a jail cell, massive canons, an officers club, and even fully furnished bedrooms. The jail cell depicted in the museum is that of the Confederate President Jefferson Davis, who was imprisoned there after the Civil War. These are all situations that would have taken place within the walls hundreds of years ago.

Completed in 1834, Fort Monroe was originally designed to protect the Hampton Roads waterway from an enemy attack and is the largest stone fort in America. Guided tours are also available here, just call ahead and make an appointment. I would recommend this attraction for mid-teens and above.

Paradise Ocean Club

Nestled away in the serene center of Fort Monroe, you’ll discover an amazing place to visit for the entire family. Paradise Ocean Club, located at 490 Fenwick Road, is situated right on the bay with a private beach, Olympic size pool, massive stage, and more! There is a walk-up casual snack bar, as well as a formal restaurant where you can dine inside or out.

They offer private cabanas for rent, volleyball and cornhole, as well as a tiki bar on the deck. There are weekly events including a wide variety of live music, happy hour specials, and food specials. There is definitely something fun for everyone here. Entry for use of the beach and pool is $10 for adults and $5 for children.

Oozlefinch Craft Brewery

The Oozlefinch Craft Brewery is definitely one of a kind. Located on Fort Monroe, just across from the water with spectacular views and great beer, it’s a must-visit attraction. The Brewery is very easy to find, has lots of outside space and (most importantly), really good beer.

Enjoy a massive selection of craft beer inside or out. On the event calendar, you’ll find multiple weekly events such as trivia night, live music, fundraisers, and food trucks. The staff is very knowledgeable and friendly. The atmosphere is laid back and fun for everyone.

Bring the family, kick it outside and play some cornhole. While you’re there, try the ‘Lady in White’, that’s my personal favorite. Oozlefinch is open daily from 1-9pm Monday-Thursday and 11.30-11pm Friday and Saturday. Sunday, they are open from 11.30-9pm.
